Re: Screen Actors Guild Awards

This is a bit disingenuous on the part of SAG-AFTRA. AMPAS has, for many years, has had a policy that anyone who appears at other awards shows except for the previous year's winners presenting this year's awards, will not be allowed to present at the Oscars. In other words, they are not stopping act...

Re: Broadcast Film Critics Awards

As for the likelihood of ties: they're never particularly likely once you get past 10-20 voters (the LA critics' propensity for ties is, thus, more understandable). Given the Broadcasters' not-even-concealed lust to be The Best Oscar Predictors Ever, the frequency with which they come up with ties ...

Re: Broadcast Film Critics Awards

Saying "this was a tie and it reminds me there was another tie" isn't terribly striking. (And " she tripped on the way up there" doesn't add much, either.) The fact that the two winners of one tie played roles that were later played by the winners of the second tie is the salien...

MaxWilder wrote:How many voters are there? Three ties in 11 years seems very improbable.

Approximately 250.

These are not the only ties. Last night alone there was another one in Best Actress - Movie Made for TV or Limited Series, which went to both Amy Adams and Patricia Arquette.

Re: Vice reviews

Ok, but why "smarmy"? The director and his actors were smarmy in the sense of dictionary meaning number while the film itself was smarmy in the sense of dictionary meaning number 2: 1. Excessively ingratiating or insincerely earnest. 2. Relating to or indulging in lewd conduct; smutty: sm...

Re: Broadcast Film Critics Awards

Cool thing someone at AwardsWatch came up with: It's now 50 years since the last (and only legit) acting Oscar tie. The winners that night were of course Katharine Hepburn for The Lion in Winter and Barbra Streisand. Glenn Close subsequently played that Lion in Winter role in a TV movie. Tonight, s...

Re: Broadcast Film Critics Awards

Apparently, the Broadcasters aren't as sold on Close as Magilla and Reza are. Giving, in addition, Colman Comedy Actress means they can claim to have predicted the Oscar winner no matter who wins. It seems to me that half of them are sold on Close and the other half are still going gaga over Gaga. ...

Re: Broadcast Film Critics Awards

The Glenn Close - Lady Gaga tie reminded me of the 1968 Oscar tie between Katharine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand right down to Gaga's tripping a la Streisand on the way to the podium.

Re: Vice reviews

I wonder if one of the (unconfessed, maybe even unconscious) reasons why this admittedly imperfect effort has been attacked by so many is, simply, an unconfortable reaction to what the movie says about American politics, the war in Iraq and more generally, power. No, it's the smarmy way it's done. ...

Re: AARP Movies for Grownups Nominations

It had a limited Oscar qualifying run beginning December 21st in New York and L.A.

It's doubtful if it will go anywhere in 2019 except straight to video.

It's treason in plain sight.

Here's the NYT article on the FBI investigation into Manchurian Candidate Trump:
