Re: Life Under Trump
Bill O'Reilly: "Putin's a killer..."
Donald Trump: "Lot of killers--what do you think, is our country so innocent?"
(In this case, Trump is correct. Maybe not for all the right reasons, or to all the right ends...)

Re: Life Under Trump
I think one of the problems at the heart of contemporary America, one that has nothing to do with Trump per se, could be summarized like this. IF Hillary Clinton had lost the popular vote but won the electoral vote, a lot of liberals would be gladly rejoicing, and there would be a lot of very offici...

Re: Swiss Army Man
No joke, I liked this sweet, goofy film quite a bit when I caught up with it last month, and thought Radcliffe gave a superb comedic performance. Oscar nomination worthy? Maybe. Too bad though ... Welcome back! I must admit that I thought of you - and your life now and your view of what's happening...

Re: Foreign Language Film Short-List
I know it's dangerous to make definitive statements (I did say "13th" was going to win Best Documentary) but it sure looks like it's Toni Erdmann from this point on. Which would only be sweet justice, considering how shabbily Cannes treated it. (Now watch it lose.) Toni Erdmann seems a li...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2015
I liked The Visit somewhat but I have to admit I don't understand how it's really a "return to form" or anything like that--I don't think it's noticeably better than Lady in the Water or The Happening , for example, both of which were attacked WAY too harshly. Shyamalan's a very, very tale...

Re: Zach Is Now A Married Man
Magilla, thanks for the kind words. No need to retitle the thread. I don't want to change anything Damien wrote. As for remarriages - that's great for your brother. I'm always very heartened by makeshift families that can operate well despite divorces, etc. As I said, I think the lack of children in...

Re: Zach Is Now A Married Man
Thanks Greg and OG. OG, I'm sorry to hear about your friend and it's got to be a lot harder if children are involved, and my ex and I were lucky in that respect at least. (It was very painful, however, because as recently as February, I sincerely believed we were both on track to try for a family fi...

Re: Steve Jobs reviews
If I ever get around to seeing this film, I'll keep an open mind. But I remember when I first heard about it, and I thought a Sorkin/Boyle team-up about Steve Jobs sounded like the absolute least interesting (more accurately: most irritating) project I could think of ...

Re: Zach Is Now A Married Man
Hey guys - it's been a long time since I've visited the UAADB, but I'm in a sentimental mood, and I've been thinking about Damien lately, and I remembered he started this very nice thread back in 2010. In case any of you old crowd would find this news of interest ... I regret to say that just recent...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2014
I can understand why Spall’s performance was such a hit with the critics and also why it failed to crack the Academy list – it’s very lived-in work, but doesn’t have the individual fireworks that tend to inspire the actors’ branch. The cast as a whole feels immersed in a Dickens-like environment; i...

Re: Our Top 10 of 2014
There are still plenty of movies I need to get to, including Norte, the End of History and Two Days, One Night . Oscar-movie wise, I haven't caught up with American Sniper (will see it eventually), The Imitation Game (ambivalent about seeing it), Wild (ditto), Whiplash (ditto), The Theory of Everyth...

Re: Gone Girl reviews
I'd say the film is definitely a satire and a very dark, dry comedy. 'Farce' is the word I'd use. Hope you're doing well, Zach. I'm doing well, thanks! Happy to poke my nose in here again. I guess I can see Gone Girl as a farce, too, but I think the element of social criticism about whitebread, mai...
