Re: Evaluating the nominees

Sign me up as well for always enjoying this thread. I'm a softer grader than you, Uri, but your view of the general contours of the race is not dissimilar to mine.

Re: Categories One-by One: Sound Mixing & Sound Editing

The two categories used to be quite distinct before sound effects editing expanded to five -- the nominees in the abbreviated category were often entirely different from the ones in "achievement in sound", which is what sound mixing was called back then. I'm not sure what's led to this hom...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Cinematography

This is a category for which the phrase "on the other hand" might have been coined. It's impossible to settle on a selection without being immediately tempted to change your mind in favor of another nominee. Of course, the first elimination is easy: if you pick Darkest Hour and it wins, I ...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Original Screenplay

2) it left the film with no below-the-line nods, and I believe no film since the 30s has won best picture with that deficiency I was going to save this stat for the inevitable Best Picture thread, but since I did a check, in the modern era, only Annie Hall and Ordinary People won Best Picture witho...

Annihilation reviews

I'm posting these because they're REALLY good -- though I have to say that I've seldom read a series of raves that made me less anxious to see a movie. It sounds like it'll be torture. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/annihilation-review-1085770 http://variety.com/2018/film/reviews/annihilat...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Original Screenplay

As others are saying, this category is one of the most interesting on its own AND as perhaps a major signpost along the way to the best picture win. I should be annoyed that The Big Sick is here instead of Phantom Thread, but the latter got so much more than it could have that it's hard to be bitter...

Re: All the Money in the World

I waited in vain to find some way to watch this for free, but Oscar completeness finally compelled me to hop out of my neighborhood and spring for it at full price. I think it's possible to agree with most everything people have written here: It's a generally engrossing true crime procedural. The wr...

The winners:

Contemporary: I, Tonya
Period: The Shape of Water
Fantasy: Wonder Woman

...and a note that, by my recollection, this Guild fairly often has little correlation to the Oscars.

Re: Categories One-by-One: Animated Feature

Since The Breadwinner isn't coming available in DVD till the utterly useless date of March 6th, and since I feel no need to sample Ferdinand till Disney deigns to to send it to my home, I know as much as I'm going to know pre-telecast about this category. I think I may have liked The Boss Baby more ...

Re: BAFTA Nominations & Predictions

The two films that have done the best by far with the tv precursors are The Shape of Water and Three Billboards. It would seem to me that these are the two strongest candidates overall, but there seems to be a narrative out there that the opposite is true — “everyone” hates Three Billboards, and no...

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

So...how was Infrastructure Week for everybody else? It feels like this week was a major step along the way of getting out of this mess. Mueller's indictments seemed to me elegantly presented: centered all around Russians -- because who in Trump's orbit could dare object to that? -- and offering soo...

Re: ASC Nominations

Just like with Lubezki, the ASC is going to keep going with Deakins till the Academy follows suit. Blade Runner 2049 gets the guy his 4th ASC win.

This one isn't as infuriating as the others. They didn't say who this person was but I suspect it's an editor since he (or she) said a lot about it.

Well, that and the fact that the headline literally says "Editor thinks..."

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

For those who've been wondering if Bob Mueller was actually going to come up with anything...I'd say it's on. It was fascinating watching Rosenstein's press conference announcing the indictments. He kept answering all questions -- e.g., "does this mean no Trump people wittingly cooperated?"...

Categories One-by-One: Best Actor

The nominees: Timothee Chalamet, Call Me by Your Name Daniel Day-Lewis, Phantom Thread Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour Denzel Washington, Roman J. Israel, Esq. This is most likely an easy one, but let’s go through it anyway. I had to wait to get Roman J. Israel, Esq. under my belt ...
