And now, the new Paolo Sorrentino film, getting at least some very good reviews: https://variety.com/2024/film/reviews/parthenope-review-paolo-sorrentino-1236011840/ https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-reviews/parthenope-review-paolo-sorrentino-1235903750/ https://deadline.com/2024/05/par...

Re: Cannes 2024

It's a refined horror movie. Did you not get the references to Dorian Gray, The Shining, and The Fly? 1) "Audacious, and Insanely Gross Body Horror Masterpiece" -- that's the headline of the IndieWire review "Grisly Body Horror Caper" -- Guardian headline How do you get "re...

Re: Cannes 2024

The thing working in Demi's favor here would be that her film/role's subtext is to some extent exactly what Sabin is talking about here: the discarding of babe actresses when they age out of what-gets-male-execs-and-audiences-hot. Beyond that...Magilla, are you on uppers or something? Did you not ge...

Re: R.I.P. Roger Corman

Very few people in the history of the movie industry have had a better eye for talent than Roger Corman did. On the night of the Oscars for 1974, when Jack Nicholson unexpectedly lost best actor to Art Carney, Corman jokingly said to him, You son of a bitch, you kept me from a clean sweep -- noting...

Re: It's way too long since we had a quiz

I've been busy this week, and regret the whole thing was resolved before I had a chance to put my mind to it.

Thanks for posting it, Uri. By the way, it's looks like you never opened a private message I sent you a few months back. It's still sitting there, FYI.

Re: Civil War reviews

I, too, would like to know what it was Wells posted. It'd have to be something from literally the last few minutes of the film to be spoiler-ific (something of which Wells is quite capable; he posted the fate of a major character in Brokeback Mountain days after the film's release). Addressing my is...

Re: Dune, Part 2

I've been meaning to write about this for several weeks, but somehow never got around to it. As someone who was pretty enthusiastic about the initial film, I have to admit to being a bit let down by this (especially with all the "better than the first" hype I'd heard). It's not that Villen...

Re: The 2024 Tony Awards

I don't know I've ever felt as ignorant on the musical side. Several of the nominees I'd barely heard of prior to the nominations run-up. None of them got exactly bad reviews, but few were greeted with major enthusiasm (Illinoise, chiefly a dance show, I'm told, probably had the strongest reviews). ...

Wonder what was the rational for coming up with their winners so late in life.

Challengers reviews

Okay, given the involvement of Luca Guadagnino, I should have had my eye on this a bit more. But it's a tennis movie, and I never anticipated reviews this good. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-reviews/challengers-review-zendaya-josh-oconnor-mike-faist-luca-guadagnino-1235870986/ https...

I think Rod Steiger was pretty good in it. Aside from Reza’s mention as a 6th spot no one else mentions him. I think he was very deserving of a nomination.
Steiger is so natural (all right: un-hammy) he's hardly recognizable as the same actor.
