Categories One-by-One: Cinematography

Given the VERY limited release Never Look Away has so far received, I may be the only one here who can give an honest overview of this category. The nominees: Cold War (Lukasz Zal) The Favourite (Robbie Ryan) Never Look Away (Caleb Deschanel) Roma (Alfonso Cuaron A Star is Born (Matthew Libatique) T...

Re: R.I.P. Bruno Ganz

A fine actor, who's probably been more widely seen in those fake-subtitled clips from Downfall than in any of his other excellent work.

Re: Details of the February 24th Presentation

Whatever the problem was, things seem to be working now. I received an e-mail notification of the response. I got the email notification as well, though it was sometime after the fact. Maybe something was locked that got unlocked. Whatever it was, thanks for working on it and (apparently) fixing it.

Re: Details of the February 24th Presentation

b]BTW, Magilla[/b]: Did you get my private message yesterday? I'd have expected a reply by now, since I specifically asked for confirmation you received it. If not, it means something's wrong with either how I'm sending private messages, or how the board is processing them. I have three messages si...

Re: Details of the February 24th Presentation

Years ago, the Tonys had two awards shows. One, featuring the so-called minor awards was on PBS, the main show followed on CBS. When they eliminated the PBS show, they still presented the so-called minor awards before the main show but they weren't televised, thus the reason for the highlights duri...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Supporting Actress

This is a category that feels like it wants to be an easy choice but something keeps knocking it off course. Some folks at Awards Watch are touting a de Tavira Upset a la Marisa Tomei. Only the biggest Roma landslide imaginable could make that happen. Whatever you think of the chances of The Favouri...

Re: Details of the February 24th Presentation

So, people have gone through and found that, though Disney-backed films are nominated in most tech categories, miraculously, they have no nominations in cinematography, editing, make-up or live short. (The only below-the-line category without a Disney nominee that survives the purge is doc short.)

Re: Details of the February 24th Presentation

Disgraceful. Cinematography and editing are, in my mind, the most significant of the techs. (But at least we're airing any category a Marvel movie might win.) I know people are protective of the shorts, but they're the ones you can most label as uninteresting to a mass audience -- if four had to go,...

Re: On to BAFTA

As Magilla knew I would, I stayed away from spoiler-sites all afternoon and watched the presentation fresh. It was an up-and-down affair, with some results (Ali and presumably Malek) ensuring Oscar dullness, but others -- mostly to do with The Favourite -- livening things up. Colman's acceptance was...

Because I saw Bao with Incredibles 2 and found the other four on You Tube, I can comment on this category. The nominees: ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR BAO LATE AFTERNOON ONE SMALL STEP WEEKENDS Mark Harris put out a tweet the other day that summed things up well: https://twitter.com/MarkHarrisNYC/status/10942919...

Re: Categories One-by-Two: Sound Editing & Sound Mixing

Only two times have these categories split between two films nominated in both categories: Slumdog Millionaire and The Dark Knight in 2008, and Hacksaw Ridge and Arrival in 2016. That doesn't mean that voters consciously think about these things, but I think it does mean that in many years voters s...

Re: ASC Nominations

A upset: Cold War wins.

Which may just mean cinematographers didn't like a director poaching on their turf. Or it could show weakness surrounding Roma.

This is the year we know less and less the closer we get to the ceremony.

Leave No Trace wins -- to continue the season's tradition of bafflement. (Not that it's a bad choice.)
