Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse I only went to this for two reasons: 1) Its being widely tipped as a possible Oscar nominee for animated feature and will have finished its run by the time the nominations are announced; 2) All the raves did get me curious enough. I have scant knowledge of comic boo...

Re: The Host of the 91st Academy Awards Is....

There's a concerted effort to get Ken Jeong to host. Whoopi Goldberg (I think she's a Board of Governors Academy member) endorsed him in Colbert and he also seems to be willing. He sounds like he would be a great choice. I only know him from The Hangover films, in which he was hilarious and upstage...

Re: Broadcast Film Critics Awards

The same year as Driving Miss Daisy , the Globes gave Best Actress - Drama to Michelle Pfeiffer for The Fabulous Baker Boys , a dramatic film centered around a night club act in which Pfeiffer's best moments are singing, most memorably "Making Whoopee" while slinked across the piano. Pfei...

Re: Broadcast Film Critics Awards

For what it’s worth, in 2000 Björk received a GG nomination for Best Actress in a MP - Drama, for Dancer in the Dark, a decidedly dramatic original musical. That's a really hard film to place. Whilst the drama category certainly first comes to mind it does have the classic trappings of a musical - ...

OscarGuy wrote:You mean like Green Book competing in Comedy. Driving Miss Daisy wasn't actually a comedy either, but that's where it dominated in 1989 too.

Driving Miss Daisy is an excellent example of category fraud. Haven't seen Green Book.

Re: The Host of the 91st Academy Awards Is....

I don't disagree, but who in their right mind would want to take their place? What will it take to get rid of Dawn Hudson, who has been CEO of the Academy since 2011? Many of these crazy ideas link back to her. Other board members come and go, but she stays put. Why? Never heard of Dawn Hudson. Loo...

Re: The Host of the 91st Academy Awards Is....

I'm sure most people have already read about this: https://www.indiewire.com/2018/12/academy-no-2019-oscars-host-at-all-kevin-hart-controversy-1202027093/ My comment: After the actual Oscar ceremony is over the Board of Governors should resign (does anyone have the authority to sack them?). 2018 has...

Re: Ladies and gentlemen – The Leadometer!

What Ladies? Anyway… 8. The One Scene Wonder. (Maybe two, max). Or as it’s also known as, The Beatrice Straight. Another one that comes to mind is Geraldine Page in The Pope of Greenwich Village. Can't recall if she had more than one scene but the scene I remember is pretty much the only moment I r...

Re: Broadcast Film Critics Awards

Bohemian Rhapsody is not a comedy or a musical. It’s a dramatic biopic that features (pre-recorded) music from Queen. I agree with MaxWilder that it was correctly classified in the drama category for the Golden Globes. And Rami Malek absolutely deserves an Oscar nomination for it. I think him placi...

There is a comment on page 29 that anyone can update Wikipedia which is exactly why I take these with a grain of salt but at the same time one could imagine these being the NY runner ups.

Re: The Host of the 91st Academy Awards Is....

Third, and most importantly, the Academy doesn't need to background check someone. I know plenty of people who had castigated Hart in the past for his homophobic material. There was a large enough group of people that knew of his history that any customary and semi-diligent investigation could have...
