Re: Foreign Language Film Watch

I've seen a few films in recent days which are highly likely to be representing their respective countries. Japan - Shoplifters I've already stated, sight unseen, that Shoplifters after its Cannes win is on it's way to Oscar victory but after seeing the film I must retract that statement. It will al...

Re: Best Cinematography 2003

Voted for City of Gold for which the photography plays such an integral part of the films success.

The other nominees were pretty blah.

Omissions include In the Cut, Strayed, A Tale of Two Sisters, Last Life in the Universe & Lost in Translation.

Poland - Cold Wars or Mug? Poland have two 'festival approved' film to choose from. Cold War, which won Pawel Pawlikowski the director's prize at Cannes and Malgorzata Szumowska's Mug which scored second prize in the Berlin competition beyond Golden Bear winner from Romania Touch Me Not which won't ...

Re: Congratulations Dame Emma Thompson

I'd always thought Emma Thompson had knocked one back but I could find any evidence on the internet of that. Pointless 'awards' really, pretty much looked down by most us living in the 'colonies'. But if she's happy to accept good on her. Speaking of Dames, I saw Tea with the Dames directed by Roger...

R.I.P. Kira Muratova

If one good thing can come from the death of Kira Muratova is that some enterprising US and/or UK distributor will restore and release her films. Haven't seen anything she has done myself but the has been on my radar for sometime now. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/kira-muratova-dead-renowne...

Re: Foreign Language Film Watch

Something I forgot which has a very good chance of making the shortlist before going on to make it places in the final five is a British/France/Germany co-production, I Am Not a Witch, directed by newcomer Rungnao Nyoni which received a rapturous welcome at last years Cannes Film Festival. Can't rem...

Re: Best Cinematography 2002

I'm not going to change my post below but I thought that Lord of the Rings 2 was nominated. I see that is was the good looking but forgettable Road to Perdition.

Re: Best Cinematography 2002

It is a good line-up but so of it was a bit ho-hum for me really. The second Lord of the Rings film suffered for being, well the second - seen it all the year before.... I was so monumentally bored by Gangs of New York that looking great mattered very little to me and the cinematography of Far From ...

Re: Honorary Oscars Wish Lists and Speculation

If they can give it to Godard knowing he will not come I don't see why they can't give it to her. They didn't know he would he wouldn't fly to L.A. to accept it, which I would personally consider being either very naive and/or stupid of the Academy. Anyway, Godard said that he couldn't fly because ...
