Re: The Post-Festival Landscape

Vox Lux will be released in December.

If its anything like Brady Corbett's first film The Childhood of a Leader it won't be getting any attention from the Academy.

Re: Best Cinematography 2016

The Handmaiden is the obvious miss, and one that stands out because of the branch's propensity for honoring Asian films. We speak of random inclusions, but this was a random omission. After two decades of producing the best cinema Asia has to offer its incredible that no South Korean film has manag...

Re: Best Cinematography 2017

I voted for Blade Runner 2049 but I feel The Shape of Water is a very close second. Dunkirk and Mudbound were also very worthy nominees. Its such a shame that almost everyone has only had the opportunity to Rachel Morrison's beautiful cinematography on a small screen. Thanks Netflix  What the ...

Re: Web of Sex Scandals

I hope you all realize how ridiculous all this is getting. Yep. Asia is proceeding with her lawsuit against Rose McGowan. I don't think she has a hope in hell of winning: https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/asia-argento-vows-follow-rose-mcgowan-libel-lawsuit-ignores-apology-deadline-153431125.html?...

Re: Foreign Language Film Watch

France have announced their shortlist of 5 films with the selection to be announced on 21 September. The films are Climax (Gasper Noe), Memoir of War (Emmanuel Finkiel), Custody (Xavier Legrand), Mademoiselle de Joncquieres (Emmanuel Mouret) & The Four Sisters (Cluade Lanzmann). I've already wri...

More development in relation to Asia Argento, this time in relation to Rose McGowan twitter comments: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2018/sep/17/asia-argento-legal-action-against-rose-mcgowan Also Sean Penn weighs in with his thoughts on the #metoo movement, which appear to be somewhat typical of ...

Re: The Wife

Great review dws. I didn't dislike the film as much as you did but I enjoyed reading your insights. I briefly mentioned the film in another thread a couple of months ago and am pasting it here FYI: "Close is good in The Wife but nothing more. She's also the best thing about a generally high-min...

Re: Honorary Oscars Wish Lists and Speculation

A list of once very active actors over the age of 60 who are still around, who have never won an Oscar but could get an honorary award - I know some sound rather far fetched Doris Day, Rhonda Fleming, Arlene Dahl, Ann Blyth, Jane Powell, Dean Stockwell, Irene Papas, Catherine Deneuve, Alain Delon, ...

Re: Honorary Oscars Wish Lists and Speculation

I suspect if Close doesn't win this year there will be a push to get her an honorary soon. Only Ullmann, von Sydow and maybe Caron would seem to have the kind of broad support that would get them honored ahead of her. But they do like to pull surprises. For example, I never expected an honorary awa...

R.I.P. Kirin Kiki

Best known for her performances in the films of Hirokazu Kore-eda. She always terrific in all the Kore-eda films she appeared in and gives a lovely performance in his latest film, Shoplifters. She also played a character who is the central focus of the 'little seen/should be more widely known' Sweet...

Re: Honorary Oscars Wish Lists and Speculation

Both Dietrich and Irene Dunne could have easily been honored during the 1950s. After all Garbo was in 1954. Irene Dunne was retired from films by the early 1950s but was very active elsewhere. Dietrich was active in films till the early 1960s and was up, about and very active until the 1970s doing ...

Re: Honorary Oscars Wish Lists and Speculation

The list of overlooked actors down the years is huge. It would be interesting to know who all were considered over the years and why they (Marlene Dietrich and Irene Dunne are just two of many who immediately come to mind) were ignored. Dietrich became something of a recluse in later life. By 1984 ...
