The Happytime Murders

The film probably does not deserve its own thread but the publicity is great for the film at a commercial level. It's not the first time 'adult' entertainment has been inspired by children's television and movies. Peter Jackson's 1989 Meet the Feebles was a very funny smutty song and musical. It's p...

Re: Web of Sex Scandals

Looks like the allegations made at George Takei may be false after all. I'm not surprised as they didn't seem too convincing in the first place. Nice to have George cleared.

Re: Best Cinematography 2000

Among the nominees, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is head and shoulders above the rest, but had YiYi been eligible Wei-Han Yang's cinematography would get my vote. Also conspicuous by its absence, along with YiYi and the previously mentioned Wonder Boys and Almost Famous , is BAFTA nominee Billy E...

Re: Historical Oscar Short-Lists

Today I rewatched MASH for the first time since the early 1980s. At the time that I first saw the film I had seen the TV series which I found to be nothing much more than serviceable. The film was and certainly remains better. I was astonished to see that the theme song Suicide is Painless was not n...

R.I.P. Lucian Pintilie

A few weeks ago I'd never heard of this director until I saw his 1968 film Reconstruction. Funnily enough at the screening I attended, speaking with a couple of long time cinephiles, none of us had ever heard of Pintile or the film. It should be noted that Pintilie is very highly regarded in Romania...

Re: Cannes 2018

Thankfully Netflix only have the North & South American rights to Happy As Lazzaro (and Girl which isn't something I'd be likely to watch anyway).

Re: Cannes 2018

Always funny when the worst film (this year being Capernaum wins a prize) whilst some of the most acclaimed (Ash is Purest White) walk away empty handed. Cannes wouldn't be the same without this ongoing anomaly.

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

Thanks for the link to the article Franz. Read through it whilst waiting at the vet getting my three cats vaccinated for their flu shots. It was very interesting reading and had a good overall perspective on Queer Cinema since the dark days of AIDs (that sadly are still with us). Probably the only p...

A link to critics ratings of the Cannes selections. Asian cinema in the competition seems to be outpacing everything else: http://www.todaslascriticas.com.ar/cannes/2018 Also, a link that I meant to post earlier but forgot, about the 'silent womens protest' on the red carpet: https://www.google.com/...

Re: Cannes 2018

Perhaps von Trier should change his name to Lars von Troll, it would a good fit and he'd gets lots of publicity which he so obviously craves.

Re: Best Cinematography 1999

On the other hand, I don't get this sudden rejection of Julianne Moore. She was perfect in the role of Sarah Miles in The End of the Affair . The film was perfectly cast all around with Ralph Fiennes, Stephen Rea and Ian Hart also turning in superb performances. I haven't seen The End of the Affair...

Re: Cannes 2018

von Trier's latest has received scathing reviews and very negative reactions. When he is going to grow up. He hasn't made a decent film since Manderlay (and I'm in the minority with that view) an nothing approaching greatness since Dancer in the Dark. Doesn't he realise that cinema of the provocativ...
