Re: Best Cinematography 2012

I had voted for Life of Pi but a win for Skyfall would also have been most welcome, the fact too that for a film with so many action set pieces you can actually see and follow what is happening. Anyway, I changed my vote to Skyfall when I discovered that it was in my top 5 of the year which Life of ...

Re: Foreign Language Film Watch

Girl - Belgium This film about a trans teenage (transitioned from male to female) who aspire a career in ballet, was something of a hit at Cannes. The film is an intimate observation piece that is very engaging from beginning to end. I found myself totally immersed Lara's world and the film handles ...

Re: Major Changes to Oscar Telecast

And moving it up to early February? Good god: there'll be no time to see the foreign/documentary nominees. And the precursor season, which already feels like fraternity rush, will be crammed into an even tighter window. Is there time now? Even last year, I only watched Faces Places, The Breadwinner...

Re: Major Changes to Oscar Telecast

It's sort of weird because last Oscar season I had and still have serious thoughts of scrapping seeing some the minor categories. I'd figured it was the 90th year and that would be a good time to stop seeing just about everything nominated, save Film, Director, Acting, Screenplays, Foreign Language ...

Re: Foreign Language Film Watch

Dogman/Happy as Lazzaro - Italy Italy would appear to have to good ones to choose from this year that are internationally know. Both happen to play at Cannes, both were well received and both one a prize each (Dogman - Actor) & Happy as Lazzaro - Screenplay). But Italy is notorious for going off...

Re: Major Changes to Oscar Telecast

Here’s a wild idea: if the members of the Academy deem Black Panther to be worthy of a nomination for Best Picture, they should vote for it. If not, they should vote for something else. The idea that this movie is somehow more entitled to a Best Picture nomination than anything — and any Oscar vote...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

This is off topic and I didn't want to start a new thread and thought this would be a sort of appropriate one because I was sitting through a film when it happened. I was utterly gobsmacked at something that happened to my partner today. We are currently attending the Melbourne Film Festival which n...

The Guilty - Denmark This has been slaying audiences across film festivals last year. It's a very tightly wound thriller set in a police emergency room and it's one particular disturbing from a young woman who appears to be in danger, not to mention the fates of her children, that set in motion this...
