Re: Challengers reviews
It’s definitely been on my radar, but I’m still a bit surprised by the raves. Guadagnino, who I’ve been following since the sumptuous I Am Love, is a bit hit and miss. He definitely has talent, and works like a madman (he has a second film, Queer, based on the William S. Burroughs novel, coming out ...

Re: O.J. Simpson Dead at 76
I don’t think anyone born since the early 90s will ever understand what an insane time that was. I was working in the school library, and the supervisor brought out a radio to the circulation desk before the verdict was announced so all the students could gather around to listen. (Pre-internet, of ...

Re: Cannes 2024
IMDB and every article I’ve read lists him in the cast. You heard otherwise?Big Magilla wrote: ↑Tue Apr 09, 2024 6:18 pm And why, pray tell, does Variety still think that Forest Whitaker is in the cast when he isn't?

Thanks. I was wondering about that.Big Magilla wrote: ↑Tue Apr 09, 2024 6:21 pm Blanchett's character was not in Highsmith's original. It was created for the 1999 film.

Ripley
Ripley, on Netflix, is worth watching just for its cinematography (by Oscar winner Robert Elswit) and production design alone. Gorgeousness abounds, quite the contrast for such a dark story. The black-and-white cinematography was an apt choice. Minor spoilers ahead for those who haven’t seen The Tal...

Re: Cannes 2024
My understanding from the reports I’ve read is that Coppola is looking for a wider distribution deal before considering Cannes, with the concern that mixed reviews might kill a possible deal. He wants it shown on IMAX screens. The film has its admirers but general word is that the film is too “out ...

Re: Cannes 2024
Megalopolis is finished, as we've seen from those screening reports, but there seems to be reluctance to take it to Cannes without distribution. (Unsure if this is referring to U.S. distribution, which is not necessary for a Cannes spot, or French distribution, which is.) My understanding from the ...

I didn’t watch SCTV, but thought he was very funny as the dad on Freaks and Geeks. I loved that show.

Re: 2024 Governors Awards
Yes, thanks for posting those, Reza. Mostly solid choices, I would say, with a smattering of questionable ones. I think Donald Sutherland was an excellent choice, as he is the kind of highly skilled actor who hasn’t won that many awards (I still think he should have been nominated for Ordinary Peopl...

Re: 2024 Governors Awards
I’m not keen on honoring either Ford or Cruise. They’re both been enormously successful (which is perhaps reward enough), but they’re both fairly limited as actors. Ford is good at playing grumpy and Cruise is sometimes good at playing earnest, when he’s not overdoing it pouring on the smiley charm...

Re: R.I.P. Louis Gossett, Jr.
Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think he was the first black actor to win an Emmy award - for Roots. He was memorable in so many films and made a superb Anwar Sadat in Sadat (1983). R.I.P. I know that Bill Cosby won an acting Emmy in 1968 for I Spy. I’m not sure if there were others. Harry Bel...

Re: R.I.P. Louis Gossett, Jr.
Looking through his credits in IMDB, I realize I’ve seen him in very little, save for A Raisin in the Sun, Roots, An Officer and a Gentleman, The Color Purple, and perhaps the odd TV guest appearance. He certainly made an impression on the teenage me playing Fiddler in Roots. He was one of the few f...

Re: Cannes 2024
Thanks, that’s quite the thorough preview. Where do you get your information about stages of production? IMDB only has pre-, in, and post- categories with no details.
