Re: Categories One-by-One: Leading Actor

I'm on the Paul Giamatti bandwagon this year! Not only for his past work but because I think he creates a really great character in The Holdovers . Murphy is deserving but for some reason I didn't get the "he's winning an Oscar for this" vibe when I saw the film last summer. Colman Domingo...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Supporting Actor

I would go with Sterling K. Brown. The performance isn't a co-lead, and he brings a range of comedy and pathos during his screen time that makes an impact on the film. His character makes us see the main character's many facets in a slightly different light than we might have at the beginning of the...

Re: Categories One-by-One: International Feature

If Academy voters see The Zone of Interest and have the same mixed response I had, there could be another winner. But not having the option of nominating either Anatomy of a Fall or Godzilla Minus One , as more popular choices, I think the "important film" will prevail. It even made my own...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Makeup and Hairstyling

It's too bad the creature effects from The Last Voyage of the Demeter didn't make it past the shortlist phase. The work there was pretty impressive, but I still think the overall work on Poor Things will likely prevail here over Maestro . After all it is "makeup and hairstyling" and I thin...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Visual Effects

I was glad to see "Oppenheimer" not get in here, because it would not have been deserving of a win considering its effects amounted to camera gimmicks and imagery we've actually seen before in terms of VFX. The film uses what it has effectively, but I think it would have kind of been cheat...

Which gives Democrats an excellent chance to flip the House back and give Biden a fighting chance of passing more major legislation in a second term.

Re: New Developments III

I'm honestly having a hard time remembering Republican debates before Donald Trump. Did they ever make points or policy proposals? Was it always just bickering and sabrerattling? He really is just there to attack Trump, isn't he? It's not working. I never thought he'd be able to bring his party bac...

Re: Post-Festival Predictions

Quick thought on Giamatti for Sideways: With Gere and DiCaprio, I have to believe the fact that there was some confusion about what category they truly belonged in. Gere has had some bad luck with the Academy. He's certainly been in well-received films and given performances that could have been no...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2023

All of which to say, less than twelve hours after watching Elemental, it's hard to remember much about it. I think the creators came up with a nice little idea ("Can fire and water fall in love?" -- by the way, I'm here for that story! That's a good rom com conflict) and nothing beyond th...

Re: New Developments III

The kind of charges Hunter Biden is up for rarely goes to trial, much less conviction. I agree that the deal was broken out of political reasons, in order to appear as if they are not being soft on him because he's the son of the president. I think that's a bad message to send, because it makes it s...

Re: 95th Oscars General Ceremony Discussion

Stewart faced maybe the toughest competition in his best years: Donat (or Gable) with Mr. Smith, March with Wonderful Life, Jack Lemmon in the Anatomy year (the Academy made a truly indefensible choice there). That's how he ended up winning for one of his least distinguished nominations. (Though he...
