Re: Evaluating the nominees

I wanted to piggyback on dws’s Praise of this annual treat. Always comprehensive, wise, and direct, Uri. I especially loved this year’s entry’s attention to Phantom Thread , one of the year’s most unexpected masterpieces. May Goddess Cyril prevail. And, yes, where was Vicky Krieps this year? Sorely ...

Re: Academy Members' Brutally Honest Ballots

Someone sat through Darkest Hour FIVE TIMES?! I couldn’t really believe that, honestly. I mean, like, really? These voters seemed to be enthralled by Mudbound. I feel like I saw a totally different movie than the IndieWite girl (I felt like that was clearly a woman actually, Wes). Can you imagine s...

Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations

That comparison is very problematic, Reza, and you’ve made it (with some suspect frequency, I might add) in several threads.

Re: R.I.P. John Mahoney

He was great at playing nice guys, but my favorite Mahoney performance was his villainous judge in Suspect with Cher, Dennis Quaid and Liam Neeson, made the same year as Moonstruck . Magilla, I was just chiming in to say the same thing. His performance in Suspect is my favorite. I love that movie, ...

How delightfully fantasy-like. In the real world, this is not the case at all. Trump and the entire GOP are one in the same now.

Where have you been?

Re: DGA Nominations

I don't understand why I seem to be one of the few people who feels this way about. But plenty of very intelligent people--including several on this board--seem quite taken by it, so maybe del Toro's dreams aren't really my thing. You’re not, dws. I thought it was a perfectly harmless way to spend ...

Re: Call Me By Your Name reviews

I don’t think that Armie Hammer just Ken Doll’d his way through the role. He was lively and joyful at points where he needed to be (his awkward ‘80s dancing was very endearing) and I thought that he inhabited the character of Oliver with a nice mix of reticence and confidence. It’s certainly not the...

I could see Armie Hammer getting a "make-up" nomination in support next year for On the Basis of Sex. I'm sure he was 6th or 7th place this year.

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

Oprah has stated emphatically that she has no desire to be president, and will not run in 2020. "It's not in my "DNA" is how she put it. Look out for Joe Kennedy, RFK's 37-year-old grandson, the fiery young Congressman from Massachusetts, who will give the Democrats' rebuttal to Trum...

Oh awesome. Let’s just hand the GOP another victory in 2020. That narcissistic old bag needs to just go away. And take Lady Jane with him.

Re: Casey Affleck Not Attending the Oscars

I don’t think Lucas Hedges is “in the club” enough at this point to get that honor. They should go for a recent Best Actor winner or maybe someone unimpeachable like Tom Hanks.

Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations

Of course I'm aware of the supporting parts she has taken in certain films. They were obviously taken for very specific personal reasons. The Homesman was at the behest of Tommy Lee Jones. The cameo in Suffragette was undertaken to play an important historical female character. With her theater bac...

Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations

Yeah, Meryl does supporting roles and even cameos (her appearance in The Homesman a couple years ago was excellent and lasted less than ten minutes). I’m not sure where you’re getting this idea that she only does top billing or nothing. Also, “the kind of roles played by Melissa Leo, Jacki Weaver, a...

Re: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri reviews

After a second viewing last night, I’m much more comfortable in seeing Sam Rockwell’s character as deeply closeted. His mother even seems to allude to it when she jokes about him going to see a girlfriend and then knowingly laughing at the absurdity of that. I also think Dixon is in love with Willou...
