Re: Oscar Predictions Thread - TIFF to NBR

This isn't like the year Cate Blanchett got in for her Queen Elizabeth I reprisal in the underwhelming The Golden Age. I'm with Tee that Dench will not make the cut this year. It's just too competitive with a very deep bench.

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

Well, she's playing a character who struggles with civil rights and is largely defined by her employer's lack of appreciation for the job she does. True, the characters she plays have differences for sure, but there are similarities. "The characters have similarities" is rather different ...

Um, thanks, Magilla. I've been reading his "thoughts" since 1999.

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

In what universe was Spencer giving the same performance in The Help as she was in Hidden Figures? Those were two different characters.

Re: Inside Oscar 2

Was Damien actively working on a third edition at the time of his death or was he not because he didn't have a book deal in place?

I'd love to hear his thoughts about the races of this decade.

Re: Post-Festival Outlook

I'm wondering if the paucity of Best Actor contenders might allow something like James McAvoy in Split to slip through the gate-keepers.

Re: Post-Festival Outlook

One of the posts I look forward to all year. Thanks for the distillation, Tee. I'm glad that Sally Hawkins seems to be on the ascent. I've enjoyed her for years now and I think she was robbed of a nomination for Happy-Go-Lucky . Something keeps telling me that Best Supporting Actress will be a showd...

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

Has The Wife been picked up with a release plan for this year? Someone earlier in the thread said it had been sent to next year a la Away from Her, but I couldn't find anything backing that claim up. I'm sorry, that was me. I heard it on another message board I frequent and took it at face value wi...

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

I don't think she has a chance in hell at this point given the way the Best Actress race seems to be shaping up, but I wanted to throw a bone to Salma Hayek, an actress by whom I've never been particularly impressed, who showed new and interesting colors in the very topical Beatriz at Dinner . As a ...

Re: The VCR / DVR / Streaming Alert Thread

Cinderella Liberty (1973) comes on tonight at 10pm on TCM. Not necessarily an obscure, hard-to-locate but it does feature Marsha Mason in a performance that netted her her first Oscar nomination (for those missing that on).
