Re: Oscar Predictions Thread - TIFF to NBR

It would be so outrageous if she’d finally manage to win this category with a borderline lead role, again, for the fourth year in a row, if we consider Arquette a lead. We have two character actresses in the run, let’s hope common sense will prevail.

Re: 2017 Emmys

I'm glad for Elisabeth Moss and Ann Dowd, both of them deserving, even though the former should have won before for Mad Men hands down, but I think that The Handmaid's Tale is quite an overrated show. I haven't read Atwood's novel, but the series is monotonous, repetitive and shallow in terms of how...

Re: Rare Films - Can anyone help me?

Both Volver a empezar and My Dearest Señorita are available on Bluray Region B in Spanish editions, the former with English subtitles and the latter without any of them. I guess it must be difficult to find some ''old'' Spanish films in the United States, even if they won the Foreign Language Oscar ...

Re: Trivia

La La Land joins a very selected group of films which were the most awarded of their respective nights but didn't manage to win Best Picture: Sunrise, Seventh Heaven, Bad Girl, The Champ, The Informer, Anthony Adverse, The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Thief of Bagdad, The Song of Bernadette, The He...

Re: Trivia

For the fifth year in a row, the film that won Best Cinematography also took Best Directing (Life of Pi, Gravity, Birdman, The Revenant and La La Land). The same achievement happened before in the 90s with Braveheart, The English Patient, Titanic, Saving Private Ryan and American Beauty winning both...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Supporting Actor

This is an interesting category, but I think this is Ali to lose all the way. It's a beautiful performance that stays in the viewer's mind for quite a while after the film's end, at least in my case, and, as say, Patricia Neal in Hud, Jason Robards or Vanessa Redgrave in Julia, one can feel his pres...

International Cinephile Society

This list of nominees by this critics association is somewhat refreshing. Some of their past winners were ''Carol'', ''Stranger by the Lake'', ''Inside Llewyn Davis'', ''Holy Motors'', ''A Separation'', ''A Prophet'' and ''A Serious Man''.

Re: Foreign Language Film Short-List

Actually the last time Spain made the shortlist was for 2010 with Even the Rain: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Spanish_submissions_for_the_Academy_Award_for_Best_Foreign_Language_Film Spain has had a number of pretty respectable films submitted since Volver. You're right about that. I forgo...
