Re: Trivia
Brad Pitt also produced "Moonlight" and the other 3 nominated films. Was he not nominated 4 years in a row too?

Re: Trivia
"Fences" is only the 2nd Best Picture nominee that Denzel Washington has appeared in. The other one was "A Soldier's Story" back in 1984.

Re: 89th Oscar Nominations
Looks like Hollywood has finally forgiven Mel Gibson.
No huge surprises overall, although I expected "Silence" to do better in the craft categories.

Re: Trivia, anybody?
Mad Max: Fury Road is the first fourquel to receive a Best Picture nomination. In addition, it becomes the 2nd sequel to be nominated without a previous film being a Best Picture nominee (the first being Toy Story 3 ), and the first sequel to be nominated without any of the previous films having re...

Re: Nomination Talk
Selma's set of nominations is genuinely odd, but I have to say, even including it for director/actor in my predictions (and knowing both of those were highly competitive), I found it hard to locate a lot of categories where it could compete. Does the song now become the go-to category for its disap...

Re: Nomination Talk
At the end of its l-o-o-o-n-g run, The Hobbit finally denies Middle Earth a visual effects mention -- but shows up in sound editing (where I believe only The Two Towers has scored prior?). At least Transformers was omitted completely. The Desolation of Smaug was also nominated in this category last...

Re: Nomination Talk
It's times like this that I miss Damien. I know he's somewhere smiling right now with Ethan Hawke nominated for his 2nd acting Oscar in the Best Picture frontrunner.

Re: Critics Choice Nominations
Another observation, since this nomination is really going to help Wes Anderson score a directing nomination at the Oscars.... but if Wes Anderson hangs on and receives a Best Director Oscar nomination, this season is going to be a huge victory for the University of Texas at Austin film school, who ...

Re: The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies reviews
Village Voice Peter Jackson's Hobbit-Embiggening Project Hits Its Spectacular End By Alan Scherstuhl Wednesday, Dec 3 2014 The biggest laugh I heard from the audience at my screening of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies came from seven words in the end credits: “Based on the novel by J.R.R. ...

Re: First 2014 Predicitons
Having just listened to Billy Boyd's "The Last Goodbye" from The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies , I can think of no scenario in which the Academy does not nominate it for Best Original Song. It might actually be the best song from the entire franchise, including both nominated songs...

I meant as in new to film.Sabin wrote:Wes, did you mean it's an IP that's new to film or a brand new IP? Because Guardians of the Galaxy has been kicking around the Marvel universe for some time in one iteration or another since the 70s.

Re: First 2014 Predicitons
Could it be a film that most of us are grossly underestimating? In my opinion, not remotely. I view Guardians of the Galaxy as no more of an Oscar candidate than Skyfall, The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, Star Trek, and the final Harry Potter film, all movies that were talked about in some circl...
