Re: Oscar Predictions Contest!

I've been busy the past few months so I haven't been able to focus on film awards this year. I think this is the first time since 2016 that I haven't even seen all the Best Picture nominees. Best Picture: Everything Everywhere All at Once Best Director: Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, Everything...

Re: Correcting Oscar 2020

Boseman, Davis, Kaluuya and Stanfield would be Lead, but I don't think Stanfield would have gotten nominated in that category if they had campaigned him there, so I will put him as "Neither" and others as "Lead". Bakalova and Odom are, in my opinion, Supporting, but I think that ...

Re: 2022 Nobel Prizes

Barry Sharpless won the Chemistry Prize once before, in 2001, making his the fifth person to win two Nobel Prizes. I'm not 100% sure but I think that Ben Bernanke is the first Central Banker to win a Nobel Prize.

Seminal director of the French New Wave. I discovered his films when I was in my late teens, and it was an eye opener on what cinema could accomplish. Having said that, I haven't liked his films that much in my later years. Probably I should rewatch some of the films that impressed me so much back t...

Re: R.I.P. Mikhail Gorbachev

A pivotal historical figure, but certainly no "great man". He had the integrity to recognize that the system was failing badly and needed reform, but he had little understanding about what would be an effective way to do that. The reforms he carried out only made things worse and things qu...

Re: 2022 Honorary Oscars

Palcy and Warren are dismal choices, in spite of Warren's huge amount of nominations. I'm not hugely excited about Weir either, but he has four directing nominations without ever winning anything, so I suppose it's fair to give him an Honorary Award. But having said that, it's really weird that Ridl...

At least in Uvalde, the press appear to be willing to criticize the police response and challenge the police narrative. That rarely happened before.

Re: Multiple nominated performers in NO Best Picture nominees

Susan Hayward had five Oscar nominations and Penélope Cruz has had four. I don't notice any Best Picture nominees that either one acted in (although I do miss things occasionally).

Re: New Developments III

How high are the odds that Marcos will finish his entire term? The outlook isn't good anywhere. If the inflation and cost of living keeps increasing, it will be difficult for establishment parties to convince working class people to vote for them, no matter how corrupt, incompetent or "illibera...

Re: Telecast Discussion

I did not know this . I haven't seen "Summer of Soul" or any other awards show [this season], though. "I was ecstatic that I was the 3RD South Asian to win that night - after Riz and Aneil Karia won earlier in the night for The Long Goodbye. 3 South Asians winning on the same night -...

Re: Notable Firsts and Records

EDIT: So I went down a Wikipedia rabbit hole on this and counted how many times the Academy has nominated more than one non-English language screenplays in the Screenplay categories and I found out that this was a fairly common occurrence in the 1960's and 1970's. Between 1960 and 1980, the Academy...

Re: Bad Ideas Never Die: Eight Awards Bumped from the Oscar Telecast

Call me naive but I think the solution to the Oscars' ratings is rather simple: WORK WITH WHAT THEY HAVE. I've been thinking along similar lines. I don't want to sound like a marketing professional, but I feel the Academy could do better if they thought more about using the strengths they do have. ...

Re: Alec Baldwin Accidentally Kills Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, Injures Director

I've been reading about this incident, and it seems the production was a mess. They apparently had several accidental discharges on set even before this one. https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2021-10-22/alec-baldwin-rust-camera-crew-walked-off-set https://nypost.com/2021/10/2...
