Re: NY Critics winners (in progress)

About 40 minutes between last tweet and this one here. Wonder who the competition was.

Re: (Ridiculous) NY Critics Voting Date

First showing of Tattoo was this afternoon, with critical comment embargoed until the studio says so. I'm going by the trailer and David Fincher's talent. Waltz comes out of left field, I agree. But after seeing the trailer (what else can we do?), I found a really interesting character - one that is...

Re: (Ridiculous) NY Critics Voting Date

Last call, I suppose, so I'm redoing my guesses after weekend reviews and buzz: Film: The Artist (if not, Shame) Director: Lars von Trier - Melancholia (if not, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo or The Artist) Screenplay: Gods and Men (if not, Shame) Actor: Christoph Waltz - Carnage (if not, Jean Duja...

Re: (Ridiculous) NY Critics Voting Date

Unlike the Oscars, the NYFCC don't have a history of "spreading the love." Their choices tend to be more heavily based on merit. Jack Nicholson has won four best actor and two best supporting actor citations - back to back in 1974 and 1975, and one year apart in 1983, 1985 and 1987. Liv Ul...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 1941

I'm off topic. But, I wanted to express my gratitude and jubilence at being a part of this board. Not only have I been able to put together a good record of the nation's top film critics' thoughts on the best films, film performances, etc., I have also the benefit of serious film lovers' thoughts on...

If naming runners-up are allowed...here are mine: Film: Shame (if not, The Artist) Director: Lars von Trier - Melancholia (if not, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo or The Artist) Screenplay: Shame Actor: Christoph Waltz - Carnage (if not, Jean Dujardin or Michael Fassbender) Actress: Meryl Streep - T...

Re: Hugo

Hugo's production and entertainment values are in the top tier of family/children's films. Rarely does such a quality movie come along (Stardust is the last one I recall) that does not simplify the world and does not pander to sentimentality and children's silliness. Here is a family film with an ad...

Re: The Iron Lady reviews

I don't understand why we are bringing politics into a discussion about the quality of an allegedly generic bio pic. I only stated fact. I acknowledge the British arts community hates her. But, the Variety review refers only to "left-leaning audiences," not all Brits. Nevertheless, the Reu...

Re: The Iron Lady reviews

Interesting. Sounds like Streep may be blowing everyone away. Certainly the most challenging female lead role of the year.

Re: NY Film Critics' Historical Results - Installment 4: 199

Cool. You think they'd publish all the vote counts? O'Neil's book is based on contemporaneous Variety articles. It's statistically informative, but Damien's Inside Oscar is more detailed about the Oscars themselves. According to the History page of the NYFC website Stephen Garrett, who is on staff a...

Re: NY Film Critics' Historical Results - Installment 4: 199

I know that some on this board do not care for Tom O'Neil. Nevertheless, I just came across his book, Movie Awards, which provides some scores for the NYFCC awards through 2002. The record is not complete. But there are details, even from before 1970, that are enlightening. For instance, I've known ...

Re: Best Film 1939

I have to take back what I said about GWTW earlier. Seems that 30 years can mean a markedly changed perspective. I just happened to catch a few minutes of GWTW last night. It was quite well composed, well-filmed, good drama. Leigh was superb. I guess I must have blended her latter day mannerisms (a ...

Re: Melancholia - Lars Von Trier's newest film

Gorgeous art direction and cinematography. Spot-on direction. A superbly creative lead performance from Kirsten Dunst. Great supporting performances.

The script is thin beyond the basic plot but serviceable.
