Governors Ball 2018

Here is an article about the 90th Oscars Governors Ball: https://www.oscars.org/news/90th-oscars-governors-ball-creative-team-announced Miyazaki Wagyu beef tartare on puffed black rice sounds the most delicious while crab-stuffed hibiscus sounds the most intriguing. Has anyone ever consumed anything...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Documentary Feature

The one I have a hard time seeing emerging as the winner is Abacus: Small Enough to Jail. It's not as emotionally affecting as some of the other nominees, nor does it feel like the timeliest politically, now that the banking crisis is a decade in the rear view. Until the current tech (dot.com 2.0) ...

Re: Categories One-by One: Sound Mixing & Sound Editing

Does anyone else think that a lot of the confusion between these two categories could be eliminated if they went back to calling Sound Editing, Sound Effects? I don't know why they changed the names in the first place.

Re: Categories One-by-One: Best Actor

I'd like to point out that in Lead Actress, this is not much of a factor. Jennifer Lawrence was Timothee Chalamet's age when she won her Oscar over Emmanuelle Riva, who was the "overdue" veteran of that year. Tough to call someone an overdue veteran for an American film award when they ne...

Re: It's Trivia Time

James Ivory, nominated for Adapted Screenplay for Call Me By Your Name , was not only a work partner, but a romantic partner, with Ismail Merchant. Together, they were co-nominated three times - Ivory for directing and Merchant for producing (Picture) - the same film, for A Room With A View , Howard...

I'm not familiar enough with Haneke to really understand what you mean with this.

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

I am assuming there is now no interest in having Trump's military parade retrace the route of the World War II victory parade. Way too close too Wall Street.

Mister Tee wrote:The only song from a true flop movie I can recall over those years was I Just Called to Say I Love You...but there, you had a genuine luminary in Stevie Wonder, and a song that had got to number one on the charts.

Just a few years earlier "Last Dance" from Thank God It's Friday won.

Re: Categories One-by-One: Original Song

This may well be the most thoroughly up-in-the-air category of them all this year -- I could see this prize going in just about any direction. Other than the usually completely up-in-the-air Foreign Film, Documentary, and Short Subject categories, I think Original Screenplay is the most up-in-the-a...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Visual Effects

Because Blade Runner 2049 ... but you can also throw in the fact that the original film is now widely thought to have been robbed in the visual effects and production design categories). Maybe Production Design, but there's no way you can seriously say "E.T." didn't deserve it's Oscar for...

Re: R.I.P. John Mahoney

He could very have gotten nominated for Moonstruck had his role just been a little bigger. "I'm too old for me! That's the problem," is one of my favorite lines in the movie.

Re: Categories One-by-One: Original Song

"This Is Me" has become the self-empowerment anthem of what has become a surprisingly (and to me, unfathomably) successful hit film. . . On the con side. . . the film is truly terrible. . . I have a theory that when an Original Song nominee is the only nomination for a film, that the film...
