Re: R.I.P. Joseph Lieberman

I want to correct something and add something. I've already posted enough on this but... I referred to Joe Lieberman as a bought-and-paid-for right-winger in the Democratic Party. I have no idea if his political beliefs are a product of his worldview or his donors. Something I'm increasingly interes...

Greg wrote If Gore had any idea that Florida would have been as close as it was, he probably would have chosen Bob Graham. I really don't know much about Bob Graham. I've looked his wikipedia over a few times. He seems smart and competent. According to wikipedia, Gore's short list was apparently Ba...

Re: R.I.P. Joseph Lieberman

For a good portion of my adult life, my politics were defined by "None of this would be happening if Gore won," which I recognize now is -- while maybe not incorrect -- not very mature. I was excited about Al Gore in 2000, I was excited at the idea of a Jewish running mate, and yet somehow...

RFK Jr. has announced that his running mate is Nicole Shanahan. Who? Exactly. https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2024/03/26/nicole-shanahan-rfk-jr-2024-bio-00149015 EDITED FOR LENGTH: I've been a bit more concerned about the impact of RFK Jr.'s candidacy towards Biden than most on this board. I ...

Trump is unable to make the almost half-billion-dollar bond necessary to appeal his New York civil fraud verdict. It appears the New York AG will start seizing Trump's property in about a week.
He's gonna do a lot of normal stuff when that happens.

For the first 30 minutes, I found Julio Torres' Problemista irritating but as it went along I liked it more. It's the story of an El Salvadoran immigrant who comes to the U.S. for the opportunity to apply to work at a toy company and quickly afterwards finds one financial trap after another as he tr...

Re: I'm always here for the Trivia

Mister Tee wrote Not a revolution, but I'd say progress. What's closer to a revolution is the number of women nominated for Best Director. This decade alone (if we start in 2020), we've seen almost as many nominated (4) than in all of Academy history combined (5). Not to mention twice as many winne...

Wasn't the recent Ari Aster film on that level (expense wise)?
Beau is Afraid cost (I think) $35m and then spent a lot marketing it. It didn't make that money back at all.

I'd imagine this would have a better shot.

Re: Civil War reviews

I mentioned elsewhere that the film cost $50m which is A24's biggest budget to date. You have to imagine they wouldn't make an investment like this if they weren't sure about its commercial appeal and how to get it.

I'm going to wait for more proper film reviews (y'know, it's the SXSW crowd). I'm not the biggest Garland fan but 28 Days Later... was ...
