In the past thirty years, four films have won four awards from the National Board of Review (unless I'm mistaken): Up in the Air, A Passage to India, Terms of Endearment, and now The Social Network. Does this mean anything? Not really. But what it helps to do is sustain and in some ways further leg...

(Mister Tee @ Dec. 02 2010,11:38) Last minute throw-in: their Special Achievement usually goes to someone who, wow, did more than one job on a film -- and the only one I can think of is actor/director Ben Affleck on The Town. I like that. Writer/actor/director/producer. If only he scored it too, he...

Solitary Man (Brian Koppelman) - 3/10

As flatly-directed as any film this year. If it's a rung or two up from Get Low, it's because it's just innately harder to screw up. It needed a more squirrelly touch.

/Greenberg/ (Noah Baumbach) I can easily see how this film might leave several posters on this board pretty cold. It did so for me too initially. "Hurt people hurt people" is a mantra that better applies to interesting people. Ben Stiller's Roger Greenberg becomes somewhat tedious on his ...

Same here. Couldn't make it past that scene. Just an absolutely disgusting scene. A girl I was seeing rented it for our second date and we both couldn't make it past that scene. I made a mental note to come back to it, but Jesus Christ! That is a horrifying moment.

(Bog @ Dec. 01 2010,12:06) Sabin, actually not a true actress, the mother of the main character Zaza in the film, the director's real life mother...but Ronit good as well. Ah. Yes. I had forgotten about her. She is quite good. As are Moni Moshonov, Lior Ashkenazi, and of course Ronit Elkabetz. Grea...

Bog, do you mean Ronit Elkabetz in Late Marriage? Because I always thought of her as a lead. I haven't seen this great film in a while.

(flipp525 @ Nov. 30 2010,1:18) (Sabin @ Nov. 30 2010,1:09) I'm a little disappointed at Julianne Moore's exclusion as she might actually give the better performance. She definitely doesn't. I think Bening is the clear stand-out in the film and the awards circuit, starting here, will reflect that. H...

With seven nominations, Winter's Bone seems to be in that weird MOST NOMMED/CAN'T WIN subgroup of the Indie Spirits. All of its nominations are richly deserved. At the end of the ceremony, it might not win a thing. I'm deeply hoping that John Hawkes pulls off a surprise win over Ruffalo and Ortiz f...

I was incredibly surprised when my parents and my sister saw this movie a few months ago and said they didn't like it. They said it was like a sitcom. It really threw me for a loop because this is one of the few movies to be released this past year that I thought for sure they, if not everyone, wou...

Streep. Doesn't take much thought. Zeta-Jones was miscast. Queen Latifah is better but her part is pretty slight. Julianne Moore is at her most wan and expressionless in The Hours. Bates is my closest runner up, and prior to precursor season I thought she might honestly win. But Meryl Streep is won...

The past two years they've tried to retool the Oscars, they've met with more steps forward than back. I say keep it going. Honestly, what do we have to lose?

Right now, my choices are as follows: Annette Bening, The Kids Are All Right Hye-ja Kim, Mother Jennifer Lawrence, Winter's Bone Julianne Moore, The Kids Are All Right Birgit Minichmayr, Everyone Else ...Kim and Minichmayr don't have a chance, but I'm becoming increasingly confident that Bening, La...
