Re: Reasons/blame for Whiteout 2?

More and more, these responses -- Cheryl Boone Isaacs's included -- are starting to seem disrespectful to the actual nominees. Given what's on the table, I fail to see the problem there. Re: Eligible Original Scores

Neither of the best scores I heard this year -- Nils Frahm's for Victoria nor Cat's Eyes' for The Duke of Burgundy -- are here. *shrugs*

FWIW, Citizenfour is far from Laura Poitras' first film.

Re: Pre-season Thoughts

The DNA profile for this type of role, though, seems to indicate that Imelda Staunton in Pride will be this year's biddy rooting interest.

Ain't that the truth. Daldry only wishes he could direct as well as Metzger, and The Reader would be lucky to be as good as "softcore porn crossed with Nazism" (e.g. Salon Kitty).

Re: Cannes

Closest to a surprise ... Bennett Miller taking director. Well-reviewed mainstream Hollywood films that seem like Oscar hopefuls -- LA Confidential, No Country for Old Men, Mystic River -- have tended to leave Cannes with great critical praise but few major prizes. Meh, take a look at the history o...

Re: Mad Men's Final Season

I also think that both Megan and Bonnie are finished. The curtain being closed on them in flight felt very final to me. It took Matthew Zoller Seitz's recap in Vulture to make it clear to me that Megan packing things and asking for the two of them to meet somewhere on "neutral territory" ...

Re: Best Original Screenplay 2013

Have seen all five. Consider Her 's screenplay more problematic than its direction and performances, but also think that its conceptual premise is underrated as a tenet of its screenplay. A ludicrously easy vote over the rest of this field. The closest runner up would likely be American Hustle , but...
