I say LOTR makes the point. I thought all of these films to be pretentious bores, and I watched them only because some I respect on this Board were entranced. Now I know that is heresy on this Board, but I stand by my opinion--and it is just an opinion so don't go calling me an evil old lout with a...

Our daughter told us about RuPaul's Drag Race. What a hoot! "It's time for me to say: Sashay Away". We roared. No worse that Biggest Loser and funnier.

Yes, I know we will get a lot of cable shows that we could never get here, but it might be kind of fun to see what everyone is *really* watching! My favourite top-five current TV shows are not the least highbrow: 1. Friday Night Lights 2. Weeds 3. So You Think You Can Dance 4. America's Test Kitche...

I was teaching English to Grade 10(sophomores to Americans) Mockingbird in 1976, and during an Easter break went to Perth Western Australia. I decided to visit a high school( it happened to be Hollywood High School!) where I met with an English teacher and discovered that they were teaching To Kill...

Nathaniel, the hair-banded "Olivia Newton-John"(Simon), a self-proclaimed "drama queen"---you remember he cried all the way through the prelims---sang "I'll Do Anything For Love( But I Won't Do That.)" Best line of the evening: Simon: "Something tells me I bet you...

I did far worse on the contest than I did the night of the Awards. Our contest was 5 points if you picked the winner, 3 if the winner was your second choice. Of course, we all missed Departures, and wishful thinking led me to Streep, not Winslet, and I missed the cartoon. I got 98 points out of 120...

I haven't seen any pre-Oscar buzz surrounding one of two Meryl Streep movies for 2009, that being "Julie and Julia". This is a film I am really looking forward to, and hope it will land her 16th nomination (and maybe a third win). Meryl turns 60 this summer, so she needs to nab her third ...

they never studied film history because the film business was doing quite well during the Great Depression because it was a way to entertain themselves and get their minds off their economic troubles. Two reasons: they gave away china and other household goods in the theatres during the Depression;...
