Re: Ad Astra reviews

This probably does have a whiff of compromise to it, but I loved it. It still felt very much like a James Gray movie in the way it shows people who are willing to go the edge of civilization itself (the edge of the known universe in this case) in a quest to understand something, in search of a tangi...

Re: List of submissions to the 92nd Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film

(You can hear EVERY noise the audience makes during it, not to mention the soundtrack of any film that may be playing in the cinema next store - my next viewing will be a home in a very quite environment thanks, I can assure you watching Portrait of a Lady on Fire with Rocketman playing in the neig...

Re: List of submissions to the 92nd Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film

Somewhat surprisingly, France has gone with Les Miserables as their submission and not Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

Re: Downton Abbey -- the movie

I think the fact that it's a movie spin-off of a TV show will keep it from being taken seriously as an awards-contender, even if it ends up with a really high Metacritic score. I also think everyone involved in the making of it is okay with that: This movie is going to make a lot of money, much of i...

And Polanski getting the Jury prize. Now that won't bode well with many folks in the United States. With this and with Woody Allen's new film getting a release in Europe it shows that the europeans know how to keep an artist's personal and professional life separate. In the publicity for this film,...

Apparently Fox Searchlight is, in fact, going to hold this until next year.

Re: Judy reviews

I think you could make an argument that Zellweger's Cold Mountain Oscar was a net negative for her career. It's one thing to win an Oscar soon after a loss, but Zellweger did it in the worst possible way--for an easy-to-parody performance in a would-be frontrunner that disappointed. (And I say this ...

Re: Kicking Off the Fall Season

Apart from the obvious Scorsese big bopper, there are no efforts that jump out as top-tier – not a single entry from the crowd that has dominated Oscar lists the past decade or so (Payne, Russell, Spielberg, Eastwood , Coens, Bigelow, Jonze, W & PT Anderson). It may not make any more of a dent ...

Re: Coming DVDs

I have the feeling Twilight Time has reached the end of the road. With only two releases scheduled for September and nothing announced for October and beyond, it doesn't look good. When they first launched there was some talk about how their business model was that the business would phase itself o...

Re: The Farewell reviews

Good movie overall, with a very generous approach to all of the characters. The mom, for example, is someone who would come across much more negative in a lesser film, but the movie never sees her conformity (and adherence to tradition) as a character flaw to be fixed. And of course Diana Lin deserv...

Young Ahmed (2019) Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne 2/10 Is your problem with this on a dramatic/filmmaking level? Or is it more in line with some of the reservations that some expressed when the concept was announced--that two older white men are telling a story that they don't and can't quite under...

Re: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood reviews

I will say that despite my mixed/negative impression on Friday, I find myself thinking about it a good bit, and mainly thinking about the things I liked, or reconsidering things I didn't like. Unlike The Hateful Eight and Django Unchained , for example, which I don't think I've really thought about ...

So Sony is trying to get publications to remove spoilers from their published reviews and articles on this. Alissa Wilkinson at Vox has tweeted that she was asked to remove the spoilers from her review, despite the fact that she gave a spoiler warning at the heading of the article, and then in the b...

I love that the article mentions my favorite Dunaway anecdote: That once, when she was doing Master Class , she refused to get in the white limousine that the theater had sent to pick her up. If I remember right Damien mentioned that incident once, and said that it was specifically because Dunaway s...
