Re: 2019 Tony Nominations

If you were thinking that Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus would be the first post-Tonys casualty, you were right. It was supposed to close soon anyway, but they're going ahead and closing on Sunday. My non-comprehensive rundown of what's coming up this season: The Audra McDonald/Michael Shannon r...

Re: 2019 Tony Nominations

Except for the 2008 Tonys, where I had been to New York and seen two of the plays, I always watch from a position of extreme ignorance. Not a great show. The jokes seem recycled from every other Tony's I've seen: Everyone who's watching is gay--hilarious! Broadway tickets are expensive! "Can Yo...

Re: The 2019 Honorary Oscars

Wallach made a lot of movies, but most were instantly forgotten (looking at his filmography I was shocked at how few I'd seen) and of the ones I've seen, his work tends to range from undistinguished ( The Magnificent Seven , The Misfits ) to outright bad ( Baby Doll , The Godfather Part III , his ca...

Re: The 2019 Honorary Oscars

Studi is, by all accounts, a good guy, and I think he's a good actor, but to me it just seems odd that he gets an Honorary Oscar when so many great filmmakers he's collaborated with--Michael Mann, Terrence Malick, Walter Hill--haven't gotten anything, not to mention actors like Liv Ullmann and other...

Chernobyl

Has anyone else watched?

I waited until the entire series had aired so I could watch it without having to wait a week. I've watched through episode two. So far it's absolutely riveting stuff--one of the best miniseries I've seen in a long time.

Precious Doll wrote:Bryce Dallas Howard has to be the most bizarre casting (and performances) I've ever seen. I really don't quite know what to make of it.

Not sure why, but observations like this will often get me to see a film faster than a full-out rave.

Re: Cannes 2019

I remember back in the late 1970's Oscar nominated and winning films like All That Jazz (1979) & Being There (1979) had their international releases delayed until after they had shown at Cannes in 1980 - one of the competition rules is that a film cannot be released outside its country of origi...

Re: Cannes 2019

Quentin going home empty-handed is reminiscent of when LA Confidential, despite American raves, got nothing in 1997. Films that seem certain to be American hits are often passed over at Cannes on a "they don't need the help" basis. This is an interesting note, because not winning somethin...

Re: Cannes 2019

Tee, you're definitely right about the AwardsWatch thread. Mad that Sciamma's film didn't get what it "deserved" and that the Dardennes got an award that they didn't "deserve" (one person said that "those two white dudes should be retired from the competition"), even th...

Re: Cannes 2019

To be fair to Kechiche, I did read a take somewhere that indicated that the hostile reaction that his film got at Cannes may be colored a lot by the MeToo movement (the first part premiered about a month before MeToo became a thing) and the fact that Kechiche is himself currently under investigation...

Re: Cannes 2019

Read somewhere yesterday that this Cannes didn't seem to have any disasters like Sea of Trees or The Last Face . All that changed yesterday, however, with Abdellatif Kechiche's Mektoub My Love: Intermezzo . It's gotten by far the most hostile reaction of any film in then competition, with most sayin...

Re: Cannes 2019

A Hidden Life got very solid "return to form"-type reviews for Malick when it debuted yesterday. Fox Searchlight outbid A24, Netflix, Paramount, and Focus Features for the domestic distribution rights.

Re: Cannes 2019

Lineup is announced tomorrow.

One film that's been mentioned in the past few days as a possibility that I hadn't considered (because I assumed it wouldn't be finished in time) is Greta Gerwig's Little Women, which is apparently complete, or nearly complete.

Re: Best Picture & Director 2018

The Favourite and Pawlikowski.

I liked BlacKkKlansman and A Star is Born too, but neither of them were even in my top twenty of the year. Bohemian Rhapsody only worked out to be my third least-favorite of these films, which is probably the closest to a nice thing I'll ever say about it.
