Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

The problem for Widows is that it got a B CinemaScore, which means audiences were lukewarm to it in general, which means word of mouth isn't likely. If Beale Street Could Talk could be a player, but what about Mary Queen of Scots? The reviews are good and the film, although period, could make a run ...

Re: Film Independant Spirit Awards

Because I haven't seen it mentioned elsewhere and I made a big deal of it in my own post on the nominations, this is the first time in Spirit history that more women were nominated for Best Director than men (3 to 2).

Re: PLEASE READ: My Fantasy Oscar League

Even if it were a Driving Miss Daisy-type film, I think it would be a DMD of 1989 caliber. Meaning that today, such a film would be ripped apart for being a lightweight version of a serious subject. I also think the narrative developing around that kind of thinking might result in Spike Lee taking i...

Re: PLEASE READ: My Fantasy Oscar League

The Spirit Award nominations are the 16th, so your game is going to have a major issue if they count Spirit nominations. Also consider Hereditary, which is sure to pick up some Spirit nominations, possibly Actress and screenplay there, maybe more. A Quiet Place might if it's eligible as well. The la...

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

I don't remember the exact details, I just challenged him on his very proudly displayed vote for Ted Cruz. I think I mentioned that I couldn't imagine anyone voting for the man who considered themselves an ally to the gay (or other minority) community. I get feeling strongly about abortion, but he c...

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

I unfriended MovieWes on Facebook tonight. He tried to morally defend his vote for Ted Cruz simply because Beto O'Rourke voted against a measure that would eliminate late-term abortions in Texas. One issue determined his vote. I called him out on it, not only did he double-down on it, he tacitly adm...

Re: All Is True

District 9 is a terrific film and deserved a Best Picture nomination more than four or five of the films it was nominated against.

That's because they WEREN'T found overnight. They were collected over a period of time and held in reserve for later use. When the scandal broke, they released it to make it seem like he had a bunch of defenders. A large number of the women who signed the letter have come out publicly as condemning ...

She also lost for her bravura guest performance on SVU. She lost her nom for Blackwater Lightship, her two nominations for hosting the Tony Awards and what undoubtedly should have won her an Emmy (if the SVU stint didn't), her Great Performances appearance on Sweeney Todd. You can criticize the proc...

Re: 2018 Emmys

Don't forget Angela Lansbury's unparalleled losing streak. Even Susan Lucci picked up an Emmy after a long drought. Was I the only one who thought Betty White sounded like she was having trouble staying focused. I felt really bad for it as it felt like they tried to trot her out for ratings, but fel...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

It's hardly a plot irrelevance. It's no different than the absence of Mr. Beale in the musical Grey Gardens. It simply demonstrates that the patriarch is too busy for everything but making money, leaving his wife to raise the child and groom him. That distance is simply a detail that explains the so...

A Message from Damien's Husband Ralph

I thought I would share a lovely little note Ralph sent to the admin contact address for the UAADB. Copied below: Hi. This is Ralph, Damien Bona's partner. I sometimes will brave going to this site and reading all the threads Damien started or commented on over the many years he was part of this ama...

Re: Major Changes to Oscar Telecast

Since Rotten Tomatoes isn't necessarily well liked, I'll also cite MetaCritic. That said, Black Panther on RT average rating is 8.2, which is quite good for an 87% fresh rating. Black Panther has an 88 from MetaCritic, which includes no negative or mixed reviews and 90 from Manohla Dargis, Kenneth T...

Re: Best Cinematography 2015

I adore Mad Max: Fury Road, but there is no better shot film than Carol. It might even be my favorite photography of the decade.
