Re: The Nominations Announcement

I know that they've been televising since at least 1991 because that's the legendary announcement of Beauty and the Beast as a nominee. As to E!, it hasn't aired the nominations in a few years. I used to watch there because they showed the whole thing, not just the televised part (they also didn't t...

Re: The Nominations Announcement

Also, according to the Academy's Twitter, Kumail Nanjiani and Tracee Ellis Ross will be announcing. The former makes sense. The latter is a television personality primarily, so that doesn't make as much sense.

Re: USC Scripter Awards

I think If Beale Street Could Talk is a lock here. James Baldwin is the most acclaimed novelist of this bunch, IMO, and this script is incredibly literary. It's the only place I think Beale has any momentum.

Re: Broadcast Film Critics Awards

Consider that the OFCS, of which I'm a member and GC member, which is roughly the size of the BFCA (which last I checked was over 350 members on the film side), has had a grand total of four ties in its 22-year history. The most recent was in 2001 when there were two ties (Picture & Original Scr...

Re: Broadcast Film Critics Awards

This is also the third tie the BFCA has cooked up in Best Actress. The last two sets were also in highly competitive years. 2008 & 2009. 2008 was between Anne Hathaway & Meryl Streep (neither won) and 2009 was Sandra Bullock & Meryl Streep. Bullock won.

Re: Potential Stats and Records for This Year's Oscars

FilmFan720 is correct. It would not count as an official nomination for Cuaron.

Re: Green Book reviews

Unfortunately, we have just the opposite reaction from Sasha Stone who's defending Vallelonga because we shouldn't let "art" be sidetracked by politics. Apart from the utter subjective gymnastics she has to go through to proclaim Green Book art, she's also defended Woody Allen. I defend Al...

Re: Golden Globe reactions

Yes it's annual. Yes it's going to be for TV only unlike the DeMille. It's also going to be named the Carol Burnett Award.

Re: DGA Nominations

I think If Beale Street Could Talk is done for at the Oscars. With PGA, DGA, and ASC all ignoring the film over work that was easily inferior, I have no hope that If Beale Street overcomes all this. There are new minority voters in the Academy, but I think BlacKkKlansman will get most of their suppo...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

While I like Roma, I don't get the praise for it. The only film this year I've genuinely loved unequivocally is If Beale Street Could Talk.

Re: WGA Nominations

Netflix and Amazon are the only ones who know how to stream content, so I tend to ignore screening links I get. I've been trying to watch FX VIP for several weeks and the playback is inconsistent, which makes it rather difficult to watch. That's the primary reason I tend to ignore them.

Re: Golden Globe reactions

I might have missed it, but when was the last time Best Drama went to a film without a corresponding director nomination?
