Yes, that actually is a real Newt ad. Don't vote for somebody because he speaks French.

Such is the world of Republicans in 2012.

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2011

The Green Hornet (Michel Gondry) It starts amusingly enough but soon becomes a travesty. Seth Rogan – who’s a combination of an unfunny version of Albert Brooks and an unfunny version of Robert Wuhl – is grotesquely miscast and “acts” grotesquely. (Other than Pineapple Express, I’ve mercifully manag...

Re: Rob Marshall to direct film adaptation of Into the Woods

You'd think after Nine -- which is not only one of the worst film musicals ever but also grossed a grand total of $19 million -- that Rob Marshall would never be allowed near a film musical again.

Don't get me wrong I love Hollywood.

Re: Best Supporting Actor 1949

Whatever the reason, it made voters turn to Dean Jagger instead, and I’ll take the minority position here and say I think they made the right choice. I’ve had the precise opposite reaction from Damien: every time I’ve seen Twelve O’Clock High( starting when I was in high school; as recently as the ...

Re: NY Critics winners

The NYFC stopped officially revealing runners-up around 1993 when newspaper ads would tout someone as Winner-New York Film Critics, and then in a parenthetical in small letters add "Runner-Up")> I remember specifically this was done for Debra Winger in Shadowlands.

Re: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is ludicrous and dull, not an easy combination to achieve. The main narrative is daft -- having a 9/11 child trying to make a connection with a deceased parent is an intriguing theme and one with endless possibilities, but what the kid in this movie is up to is co...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 1950

I've always liked Jeff Chandler as an actor/movie star, but in his breakthrough role in Broken Arrow he is perfectly serviceable without doing anything particularly memorable. I suspect that his nomination came more because of his character -- a sympathetic Native American -- than his performance. I...

Re: DGA Nominees

The DGA is traditionally, umm, less adventurous than the Academy's Directors Branch, so I don't think this snub means much of anything regarding Malick's Oscar chances, and I am still pretty confident that he will get his deserved nomination. And I am very confident that at least 250 Academy members...

Re: Make Up shortlist

I don't remember any particular makeup in Gainsbourg -- a godawful movie, by the way -- other than as the years went by, the title character became more and more dissipated. There was an obnoxious puppet who sometimes accompanied the lead actor, but I don't think that would constitute makeup.

Re: DGA Nominees

Scorsese's inclusion surprised me. I didn't think Hugo was currying much favor other than reviewers who felt obligated to praise a Scorsese picture and Scorsese acolytes, of which there are apparently many in the Directors Guild. FIncher seems to have coe out of nowhere -- perhaps from residue sympa...

Re: New Developments III

Thanks for sharing your story, Sabin. I'm still on the fence about voting for Obama in 2012 or being true to myself and going progressive or lunatic fringe. Well, actually, I'm not on the fence, I'm almost always on with the right side of the fence (your story, Hilary Clinton pushing for gay rights ...
