Re: Major Changes to Oscar Telecast

"It's expected that it's the crafts categories as well as the three short-film categories that will be relegated to the non-live presentations, but the Academy said today that the affected categories would rotate from year to year, presumably so that none of the crafts branches feel they are be...

Do we expect the inevitable backlash before or after the nominations?

Re: Major Changes to Oscar Telecast

I'm guessing it's too much to ask that they go back to the standard five nominees for Best Picture? Introducing a Popcorn Oscar is a knee-jerk reaction to a decade of the failed expanded slate that only introduced dreck to the proceedings - if they're planning to ghettoize the popular movies, do awa...

Major Changes to Oscar Telecast

Thoughts on these new changes? I'm curious and slightly petrified of what this "achievement in popular film" is going to look like.

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

Going back to the Simon thoughts, this quote is from a longer piece on Queer Cinema. Beyond discourse, the question of what makes a film queer has become subsumed by aesthetics and narratives that display a straight gaze. The most egregious example is one of the most recent: Love, Simon, a gay bildu...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

Re: Blockers and Love, Simon. One of them is an openly gay-themed movie marketed as such, while the other initially appears to be a gross-out comedy but features an un-marketed and affecting gay sub-plot handled, I thought, quite gracefully. One of the bigger surprises of the year so far.

Re: The Americans: Final Season

I tend to leave the reviewing and pontificating to the paid professionals, but last week's episode with the Thanksgiving dinner was superb. It's going to be a wrenching final four episodes.

Pulitzer Prize - Fiction 2018

Andrew Sean Greer - Less

Runners-Up:
Elif Batuman - The Idiot
Hernan Diaz - In the Distance

By coincidence, I am just in the middle of Batuman's excellent novel (it is on the shortlist of the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award), and I've just started on Greer's winning novel. So far, so good!
