Re: Best Supporting Actress 2011

McCarthy gets my vote by virtue of being the only nominated performance that I thought made an already-good movie even better, which is a major factor for me in determining my supporting winners. The others are all varying degrees of good, but their good work is being done in films to which I just d...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 2009

I guess I can sort of sympathize with those who are annoyed at how inevitable Waltz's victory eventually became, but for me, he completely blows away even my second choice for the award. He just makes that strong an impression in Inglourious Basterds that when I think about giving this award to anyo...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 2008

Tropic Thunder isn't a perfect comedy by any stretch of the imagination -- I think it comes from too deep in the Hollywood "family" to be a particularly biting or insightful satire -- but the character of Kirk Lazarus is perfectly conceived and executed, and Downey is my pick for the win ...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 2007

Casey Affleck's is the worst kind of category gerrymandering: Not only is he a lead, but if only one actor per film can be called "the" lead (and there's no argument to be made for such a position that, in my humble opinion, isn't complete b.s.), then Affleck is it for The Assassination of...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 2006

I quite like this year for this category, even if the Oscar lineup includes some clunkers, and Murphy is my pick for best of both the ballot and the year. Yes, there are a lot of familiar "Eddie Murphy-isms" in his Dreamgirls performance, but he uses them to a completely different effect t...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 2005

To me, 2005 was a cinematic year overflowing with award-worthy performances by supporting actors -- I've only made a list up to the top 10, but if I ranked the next 10 as well, I have no doubt I'd end up with 10 performances I'd happily nominate over my #5 picks from most surrounding years. Unfortun...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 2004

Foxx is far better in Collateral (still his best performance) than in the execrable Ray , but he's no less a lead in the former than in the latter, and Alda does commendable work in a fine little role, but that shouldn't have quite been enough for a nomination in this relatively good year. I'm votin...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 2003

Mystic River has held up just fine in my book, and whatever flaws 21 Grams has (and it has plenty), all of the three central performances go a long way towards overcoming them. Robbins and especially Del Toro are both excellent in their respective films, for reasons that have already been detailed ...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 2001

Broadbent definitely gives a touching, award-caliber performance, but he's a lead, and in a film I don't much care for. I don't see how anyone could argue that either of the Oscar-nominated Training Day actors was a supporting player. Washington may have been the "star," in the truer sense...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 1999

Has such a strong year for supporting actors ever failed so completely to register at the Oscars? Malkovich and Plummer are the most-discussed snubs, and are my top 2, but I'd say John C. Reilly (for Magnolia ) and Stephen Rea (for The End of the Affair ) are on the same level. Jeffrey Wright ( Ride...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 1996

Oh, 1996. How can I vote for William H. Macy, considering that his placement in this category arguably ties with Casey Affleck for the second-worst case of category fraud in this category's history (with Jamie Foxx and Jake Gyllenhaal tied at No. 1)? How can I not vote for William H. Macy, consideri...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 1995

I would've accepted, for example, a lead actress campaign for Andie MacDowell in Short Cuts based on not much more than the fact that her charcater just feels like a dominant role. I have to admit, I've occasionally come up with category placement for my personal awards based on little more than th...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 1993

I'll throw some much-needed (for this board, anyway) moral support Tommy Lee Jones' way. Unlike most of you seem to, I do think he gives a great performance in The Fugitive , and I'm glad he won. Yes, it's a cool role that could be effectively played with a simplistic "badass" presence, bu...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 1994

I don't know if I'm necessarily surprised that 1993's lineup is generally considered superior to 1994's, but I do disagree with that assessment. 1994's Best Supporting Actor category gave me the one instance in the history of the Oscars where the Academy chose exactly the lineup I would have chosen ...
