Tamara Ikenberg of the Louisville Courier-Journal has some fun comments about all this: Bride of Scientologystein Tom Cruise's fervor for Katie Holmes disturbs me on a very deep level, and not just because it seems so staged, or because he is significantly older and shorter than the "Dawson's ...

I read on a gossip message board that Brooke (either herself or her publicist) responded to Cruise's insensitive comments on Inside Edition tonight (I work in the evening, so I missed it)--something to the effect of (and I'm quoting from the message board): "She said his comments were irrespon...

It would be had it not been nominated for Foreign Film last year, thus making it ineligible for all categories next year. Ya know, that just sucks. I just got back from seeing Downfall, and Bruno Ganz is staggeringly good. In fact, the entire cast is sensational (Alexandra Maria Lara is quickly bec...

According to IMDb, Downfall opened in Los Angeles February 25, 2005, which it makes it elegible in other categories--such as Best Actor--for next year's Oscars, correct?

I'm hoping against hope that Best of Youth will show up in Tampa, but I'm not holding my breath. I was in Dallas last week, visiting my brother, so I took the opportunity to go see Gunner Palace, a documentary about a unit in Iraq. It's disturbing, frustrating, enlightening, sloppily filmed, but ri...

I wouldn't consider Longest Day or How the West... anthology films, since, even though some actors may not appear together, they are part of the same story--as opposed to Pulp Fiction, which is three loosly related stories.

Bottom line, though, is that All the President's Men, not Taxi Driver, not Network and certainly not Rocky, was my choice for best picture then and remains so. Not to get this thread off-track, but what's the collective opinion of Bound for Glory, the fifth nominated Best Picture that year, and, sh...

Next I will return to WW1 and I want to read a book on the Battle Of Jutland. So Penelope should I read 'Castles of Steel'? Robert K. Massie's "Dreadnaught: Britain, Germany and the Coming of the Great War" (originally published in 1991) examines the naval arms race between Britain and Ge...

My non-fiction tastes have tended toward Polar Exploration (any ill-fated journey will do) and recently to World War One. I second Okri's recommendation of "Paris 1919" and also highly recommend: John Ellis' "Eye Deep in Hell: Trench Warfare in World War I"; Alistair Horne's &qu...

Damien, did you see Mean Girls? I hate to disagree with you again on an actress, but I was totally taken with Rachel McAdams...
