Re: Simpsons question

Disney Plus is maybe the most watched channel/app in our house, so The Simpsons is on a lot. An episode post series 9/10 that I could watch again and again in Kill Gill from series 18. The basic plot is that the Simpsons allow Gill Gunderson to spend the night at their home at Christmas and he refus...

Re: Honorary Oscars

Is it just me, or is it a bit disheartening to see Ian McKellen on the list? I have to remind myself that he didn't win for Gods and Monsters.

I would add Jerry Bruckheimer to the Thalberg list.

Re: Notable Firsts and Records

Also, though this might happen more often than I realise, the Best Short Film winner An Irish Goodbye was directed by a due. So we had two two-person directing teams winning the same night.

Re: Notable Firsts and Records

This likely doesn't count, and I'm only mentioning it because I live in the country, but Bulgaria are claiming Navalny to be the first Bulgarian film to win an Academy Award. This is likely due to the involvement of Christo Grozev, who was on Bulgarian TV this morning talking about how he financed t...

Re: Notable Firsts and Records

Is this not also the first time we have a nominated performance for playing a real person, Marilyn Monroe, in the same category as another who was previously nominated for playing the same person?

Re: Critics Choice Awards

The "critics" of the Critics Choice Awards are not really critics and never have been. They are pundits at best. They used to be largely TV "critics" who were given a couple of minutes once a week to comment on the week's new releases. More recently they have been bloggers and t...

Re: The Banshees of Inisherin reviews

I watched this last night and maybe because of all the hype I was somewhat less enthused by it. While watching, it reminded me of John Michael McDonagh’s far superior Calvary. I may watch that again tonight.

Re: NBR Winners

The Best Picture Oscar race is over - Top Gun Maverick wins hands down. AMPAS is scared shitless about its slide into irrelevance and a big-tent, crowd-pleasing blockbuster with a touch of quality prestige is made to solve all problems. I've never been more sure of Best Picture winner this early in...

Re: Avatar: The Way Of Water

Another thing that is puzzling about Avatar: The Way Of Water is how the cast was trained to hold their breaths under water for several minutes...With the use of blue/green screens, mattes, etc., there should not be a need for actors to do so much stunt-like work as this. This is true. When everyth...

Re: The When Will They Win? Thread

For Actress, I reckon Amy Adams should very soon win her Oscar. Bradley Cooper will win, but who knows in what category. A director I’d love to see get his due is David Fincher, which will hopefully happen soon.

And I’m still holding out hope that Ridley Scott gets his Oscar also.

Re: Telecast Discussion

A slap is used to display anger/disapproval in a dramatic way, not to cause actual harm. IOW, a show of dominance meant to cause humiliation. Plus, a punch almost certainely would have gotten him arrested. Here's my question. If this were staged, what does Smith get out of all this? What is the ups...
