It's definitely cultural/generational. The film itself is about the same level as March of the Penguins, though as someone who is of a generation that watched Mister Rogers Neighborhood, I certainly prefer it.

The only point in the Academy's favor is its push to diversify its ranks. The PGA largely consists of the Old Boys Club, which might explain why the Feel Good Movie About Racism could triumph over films with much headier topics. Apparently, the Broadcasters aren't as sold on Close as Magilla and Reza are. Giving, in addition, Colman Comedy Actress means they can claim to have predicted the Oscar winner no matter who wins.
