Re: Major Changes to Oscar Telecast

Here’s a wild idea: if the members of the Academy deem Black Panther to be worthy of a nomination for Best Picture, they should vote for it. If not, they should vote for something else. The idea that this movie is somehow more entitled to a Best Picture nomination than anything — and any Oscar vote...

Re: Major Changes to Oscar Telecast

Popular movie: Super dumb and pandering and insulting. Moving the show earlier: I don't dislike it, though it won't have the effect I want (release the fucking movies earlier, people. I still want to punch SPC in the head for how they handled Another Year) Shunting awards aside: I won't watch the sh...

Re: Cannes 2017

That's cool that you get to see the entire competition lineup. I've gotten relatively deep into a few lineups, but I've never finished one. (I usually will have a few stragglers that I can't access, and then I'll get bored and move on.) Ditto. I tried last year with 1997, but some films just couldn...

Re: World Cup 2018

Very much. Did Lisbon and Ponta Delgada for a vacation and I clearly need to return (and add Porto next time, as well as other Azore-islands).

Re: World Cup 2018

Random thoughts a) Maybe firing the manager two days before the event was not the right move, Spain... b) Messi and Ronaldo departing on the same day was too delicious for words. One of the more frustrating debates in the sport . c) Japan vs Belgium.... what a match. Gutted for Japan, but the Belgia...

Re: Best Cinematography 2006

Children of Men not getting a production design nomination was hugely dispiriting in it's own right, I felt. I think it was you, Tee, that referred to the film as "eye-protein" (as opposed to "eye-candy") and that's how I felt about the work done there. Some stunning Guernica-lev...

Re: Best Cinematography 2006

Easy vote for Children of Men, though I have a soft spot for The Black Dahlia (which I really like, overall) and The Prestige. Pan's Labyrinth is one of the most overrated films of the 21st Century. Barely remember The Illusionist.

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2018

Saw Hereditary to take a break from American politics. Very well done. The sound design is insanely good, as is Toni Collette.

Re: 2018 Tony Awards

Yeah, when Ari'el Statchel won, I thought the show might do a clean sweep - I might have ranked him last. It really is a beautiful score and I'm glad it did well (and it probably needed to, box office wise), but gotta feel bad for Pask - only guy from the show to go home empty handed.

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

Yeah, this was a uniquely bad weekend on this side of the border. We got our Tinpot Trump in the Ontario Election (analogy: population wise, Ontario is to Canada what California + New York + Texas + Florida + Pennsylvania are to the USA). The G7 meeting seemed like it was headed south before it star...

Re: Isle of Dogs

1. Desplat's score was amazing. 2. I enjoyed it, but a lot less than Moonrise Kingdom or Grand Budapest. 3. The racism controversy is interesting (not sure I agree with it, but worth engaging with anyway) but I'd argue Darjeeling is a lot more offensive on that ground - I remember leaving the theatr...

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

Few thoughts a) Yeah, most of the people I know are thinking very seriously about Trump launching a war of aggression. His obsession with using nuclear weapons, his warmongering cabinet, his rampant instability... all terrifying. b) I will say that China's "grudges" are very much linked to...

Re: The Americans: Final Season

I was riveted by the first four seasons, but I couldn't watch it after the 2016 elections. It hit too close to home. Maybe I should binge watch the last two seasons and then delve into the final season. Right there with you. I took a long time to start the fifth season and still haven't finished it.

Had I known "This is Me" wouldn't win, I probably wouldn't have listened to it. What an earworm of a song.
