Re: Categories One by One: Best Actor

Also, I just found out it's "pole" position, not "poll position."

Wonder how many times I've gotten that wrong :D

Categories One by One: Best Actor

Otherwise known as what the hell is happening and why? My confusion about best actor is matched by my refusal to believe in reality. Reality tells us Rami Malek is winning. And honestly, I should be pleased. I really like him as an actor. I mean, he’s memorable even with a bit role in a film like Th...

Re: Bohemian Rhapsody

That's right, flipp. You did make an accurate prediction. However, you almost made an inaccurate prediction and therefore cannot be pleased about what you got correct. Thus spaketh the prophet.

Re: SAG Predictions

I'm intrigued by the idea that not having an individually excellent performance (aka, not in the top five of the year) automatically excludes a film from being a great ensemble. I'd challenge that vociferously. I'd argue there wasn't a finer ensemble on television than The Wire , but the nature of t...

Re: If Beale Street Could Talk reviews

If that was for me, I don't think I was. It's not so much about collusion, but I do think there is a degree to which the proscribed narrative takes hold and the centrality of the Oscars and the Oscar race to the discussion.

Re: If Beale Street Could Talk reviews

I don’t understand why Regina King is sweeping the awards. I do understand why the score is [almost]. 1. Amusing comment to post on the night of the SAGs. 2. Honestly, I think we have to catch up to Tee here and realize just how deeply the critics groups (both old and young) have taken the precurso...

Re: Reactions

Is Marina de Tavira the first supporting nominee from a foreign film since Valentina Cortese for Day for Night? I’m really happy for her nomination. I thought she was excellent in Roma. Sam Rockwell’s might be a “honeymoon nomination” but at least his performance in Vice is an actual supporting one...

Re: Final Nominations Predictions

Best Picture BlacKKKlansman The Favourite Green Book Roma A Star is Born Vice It's probably folly to predict this few nominees, but I kinda want to. This seems like a year where if it could happen, it would happen here. I mean, it would require a collection of films that truly feel ahead of the res...

Re: Final Nominations Predictions

It's definitely cultural/generational. The film itself is about the same level as March of the Penguins, though as someone who is of a generation that watched Mister Rogers Neighborhood, I certainly prefer it.

Re: PGA Winner

The only point in the Academy's favor is its push to diversify its ranks. The PGA largely consists of the Old Boys Club, which might explain why the Feel Good Movie About Racism could triumph over films with much headier topics. I'm going to tattoo this on me, Memento-style. Yesterday: I resent the...

Man, this year is going to suck.
